Can You Really Install a Mini Split Yourself? An Honest Look at MRCOOL DIY®

- Yes. MRCOOL DIY® systems were designed for homeowners to install.
- No vacuum pump, no flaring, no refrigerant gauges. The line set comes pre-charged.
- Plan a weekend and a helper for lifting the indoor unit.
- Hire a licensed electrician for the power circuit. MRCOOL requires it, and it's usually a short job.
We get this question more than any other, usually from someone who just got an HVAC quote and nearly fell over. We're DIYers who put in our own MRCOOL systems before we ever sold one, so here's the honest version.
What makes a mini split "DIY"?
A traditional mini split install has one step most homeowners can't do: after connecting the copper lines, a tech pulls a deep vacuum with a pump and micron gauge, then releases refrigerant. Skip or botch that and the system fails early. That's why the pros are needed.
MRCOOL's DIY® line removes that step. The Quick Connect® line set comes pre-charged and sealed. You thread the fittings on with two wrenches, open two valves with an Allen key, and the refrigerant is already where it needs to be. No vacuum. No flare tool. No gauges.

Here's the whole job in plain terms. Our step-by-step install guide walks through each step with videos.
- Mount a metal plate on the inside wall (level, into studs).
- Drill one 3½ in hole through the wall, sloping slightly down to the outside.
- Set the condenser outside on a pad or wall bracket.
- Hang the indoor unit and feed its lines through the hole.
- Connect the line set at both ends with two wrenches.
- Open the valves and check for leaks with soapy water.
- Power: an electrician runs the dedicated circuit and disconnect.
- Test run for 30 minutes in cool and heat.

"I've never drilled a 3½ inch hole."
A hole saw on a regular drill handles wood-frame walls. The trick is checking for wires and pipes first, then drilling from inside until the pilot bit pokes through and finishing from outside. Brick takes a hammer drill and patience. MRCOOL has a short video on exactly that.
"What if I mess up the refrigerant?"
You aren't handling refrigerant. You're tightening fittings. The real rules: keep the caps on until the moment you connect, keep the threads clean and dry, use two wrenches, don't over-tighten, and no Teflon tape. Then spray every joint with soapy water. Bubbles mean tighten a touch more.
"The indoor unit looks heavy."
It's awkward more than heavy. Feeding the lines through the hole while hooking the unit on the plate is the one moment you want a second set of hands.
What we tell everyone to hire out
The electrical circuit. The condenser needs a dedicated breaker, the right wire size and an outdoor disconnect. MRCOOL's manual says electrical work must be done by a qualified electrician, and local code usually agrees. It's typically a few hours of work and keeps you square with your warranty and your inspector. See our MRCOOL DIY® electrical guide for the numbers to hand them.
Who should not DIY this?
- If you aren't comfortable on a ladder or with a drill, a handyman can do the mechanical part for a fraction of an HVAC quote.
- If your run from indoor unit to condenser is longer than 75 ft, a DIY system isn't the right fit.
- If your HOA or local code requires a licensed HVAC installer, check before you buy.
Is the warranty still good if I install it myself?
MRCOOL backs DIY® systems with a factory warranty as long as they're installed following the manual and local codes (with electrical by a qualified electrician). Register it after install and keep your receipt. That's a big part of why we sell DIY® and not a no-name brand.
Most bedrooms and offices land on a 12K 115V system. Living rooms and open spaces usually need an 18K or 24K. Not sure? Read what size mini split do I need or just ask us.
